The Ottoman Empire was still at its zenith in 1747 when Sultan Mahmud I commissioned the dagger. It was intended for Nader Shah, the ruler of Persia, a diplomatic gift to smooth tense relations between the two empires following years of Ottoman-Persian wars. The dagger was meant to dazzle — and it does. It’s encrusted with three enormous emeralds on the hilt, diamonds, and enamelwork. A fourth emerald conceals a watch in the pommel. The craftsmanship is extraordinary even by the exquisite standards of the Ottoman imperial workshops.
The twist: The gift never arrived. While the Ottoman envoy was en route to Persia to deliver it, Nader Shah was assassinated The delegation turned around and brought the dagger back to Istanbul, where it has remained ever since. That accident of history is why it’s in the collection Topkapı Museum. And now it’s gone missing.
Your Mission: Explore Istanbul. As you walk, your steps take you through the city virtually, to its most fascinating locations, hearing their history and secrets along the way. When you arrive, you’ll get clues to help you eliminate suspects, solve the crime and recover the dagger.
